PPG Paints Arena ranks among most-popular concert venues in world
PPG Paints Arena can rock with the best of them.
The facility in Pittsburgh's Uptown ranked 41st among the top 200 arena venues around the world, based on ticket sales for concerts, family entertainment and other shows between Jan. 1 and June 30, according to Pollstar, a Fresno, Calif.-based trade publication that covers the concert industry.
In the first half of the year, 204,233 tickets were sold for events at PPG Paints Arena.
Pollstar's mid-year ranking was released in July. The list does not factor in ticket sales for sporting events but it does include ticket sales for "sports entertainment," such as Harlem Globetrotters and World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. events.
The top three spots on the list went to venues in the United Kingdom.
No. 1 was the O2 Arena in London, whose events sold 1.04 million tickets.
The highest-ranking American venue was the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Barclays Center. It ranked ninth, with 376,230 tickets sold.
Built in 2010, PPG Paints Arena was called the Consol Energy Center until last year, when Downtown-based PPG Industries Inc. signed a 20-year naming rights deal.
The 720,000-square-foot home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins can hold 18,387 spectators for a hockey game, 19,758 for a center stage concert and 19,000 for a basketball game, according to the arena.
